A Dogs Nose

A dogs nose is a powerful thing. You can harness this power to keep your dog mentally stimulated. While I like stuffed kongs every now and then, I’m not a fan of other things such as puzzle toys or lick mats to keep a dog occupied or stimulated. I prefer to harness the awesome power of the dog nose instead. One of the ways to do this is scatter feeding – using a meal, throwing handfuls into the grass and letting your dog search for his food. Not my number one choice however, as rabbit poop is a common occurrence ‘round these parts, a delicacy, and I’d prefer not too much of the delicious Easter treat be ingested along with the kibble.

My absolute favourite is teaching a dog the “find it” game. Searching for their meal (or food reward) in the house and eventually moving to other areas. It is a fantastic fair weather activity that truly harnesses your dogs most power natural sense. It’s easy to teach, cheap and an effective way to mentally stimulate those doggy brains. You can even move to toys for this satiating exercise for those toy motivated canines.

I will do a separate post over the next few days on introducing this game to your dog. It is great for these upcoming cold winter months, especially for the smaller dogs who can not get out as long in the frigid weather.
