Here are five things to follow that will make your life easier on your journey with your new puppy.
✅ Proper containment – helps with house training, establishing rules absorbing boundaries, helps avoid problems down the road, keeps your puppy and house safe and helps to alleviate the stress of dealing with a new puppy. Containment comes in the form of leashes, crates, safe rooms or x-pens.
✅ Set an Alarm for potty time. During the day and overnight, especially for brand new puppies. This can help to avoid overnight accidents, and keep you on task during the day for frequent let outs to help your puppy be successful in their house training.
✅ Don’t entertain or think you have to be with your puppy 24/7. This is utterly exhausting by and can lead to us burning out and the puppy not being able to solve life without being constantly entertain by someone. This is NOT what you want to perpetuate in an adult dog. Puppies need to learn how to self entertain safely/correctly and how to be bored. Provide chews and safe toys to help them out.
✅ Don’t act like a toy/prey. This is especially important for children. High pitched voices, screaming, running, flailing, rolling around on the ground is going to get you bit, guaranteed. If you want you puppy to be calm, you need to learn to do so as well.
✅ Require frequent sleep/down time. This is a MUST! Many problem puppy behaviours arise out of being over tired. Puppies need a huge amount of sleep and when they don’t get it, they can begin to act like over tired toddlers, and that is never fun. Frantic biting typically occurs when the puppy hasn’t had enough sleep. Sleep is important for both physical and mental development, but is also important for behaviour regulation.
Happy training!!
