Patio season is creeping up quickly, thank goodness, and some people out there enjoy bringing their dogs with them to have a pint. There are a few dog friendly patios in town that are happy to see our four legged friends join their owners for a night out. I’ve put together a video below highlighting some of the things that you can practice, and steps that you can take to prepare your dog for joining you on date night.
I must stress however, dogs who are uncomfortable, nervous and anxious in these situations and dogs who are reactive or out of control need work before attending a very public scenario like this. Dogs who are aggressive, whether to other dogs or people, should not join you on the patio and should have extensive work done before attempting public outings, and even then, sometimes best not to attempt these at all for the sake of your dog and those around you. Not all dogs enjoy this type of thing, and some are happier to be left home and that’s ok.
One thing I didn’t add in the video that bears mentioning is it’s a good idea to exercise your dog first before you attempt public outings. This will help them be able to settle with more ease, rather than doing it with a bunch of un-expended energy bubbling up, making it harder for the dog if they haven’t been exercised ahead of time.
Our friends at Global Pet Foods Milton are sponsoring the patio at the Eighth Note for the summer, so come on out and enjoy a couple with your best friend!
Happy Training!
